The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch

A witch raises a human baby who grows taller than her.

The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch (Japanese: でこぼこ魔女の親子事情, Hepburn: Dekoboko Majo no Oyako Jijō) is a Japanese manga series by Piroya. It first appeared as a one-shot on Flex Comix’s Comic Meteor website in July 2018, then began regular serialization on the same site in July 2019. An anime adaptation by studio A-Real ran from October to December 2023. The story centers on Alyssa, a 207-year-old witch of small stature, who lives alone in a forest and adopts a human baby she finds there. Sixteen years later, the child, Viola, has grown far taller than Alyssa, causing people to often mistake Viola for her mother. The series follows the odd daily lives of Alyssa, Viola, and those around them. Key characters include Phoenix, Viola’s summoned familiar; Lyra, a prop shop owner; Giriko and Luna, Alyssa’s witch friends; Fennel, a customer with a crush on Alyssa; his ogre friend Grinde; Lyra’s husband Pond; Alyssa’s father Auri; and the violent summoned creature Doku-Koala. The manga has released seven tankōbon volumes as of March 2026. The anime, directed by Masahiro Takata with scripts by Gyro Knuckle, character designs by Miwa Yoshida, and music by Myu, aired on Tokyo MX and other networks. Its opening theme “Sugar Doughnuts” was performed by Nana Mizuki, and the ending theme “Welcome!” by angela. Crunchyroll streamed the series, and Medialink licensed it for Central, South, and Southeast Asia via its Ani-One Asia YouTube channel. In 2020, the manga was nominated in the web category for the 6th Next Manga Awards.

Reader's Guide

The series is notable for its comedic reversal of the typical mother-daughter dynamic, with the younger-looking witch being the mother and the taller human being the daughter. The anime adaptation, produced by A-Real and directed by Masahiro Takata, aired from October 1 to December 17, 2023, on Tokyo MX and other networks. It was streamed by Crunchyroll and licensed by Medialink in Central, South and Southeast Asia. The opening theme song 'Sugar Doughnuts' was performed by Nana Mizuki, who also voiced Viola, and the ending theme 'Welcome!' was performed by angela.
